The run of five straight cases (032-036) with no Marchetti involvement ended in Case 037, when he surfaced again as an incidental, unpaid source of truth about his own docks rather than an employer or an antagonist — no fee, no favor, no danger from him at all. Case 038 extended the pattern a second case running: he confirmed a promoter had rented his gate without leave and flatly refused to do anything for free about a name on a hiring list. Case 039 pushed it a step further than either: for the first time since Case 037 reopened him at all, Marchetti didn't appear in any role, not even as an unpaid witness — the walking boss and his crew handled the whole rigged killing and its cover-up entirely inside the hall, with no need to call on the man who owns the docks above them. Case 040 extended the run further still, and in a new direction: a radio sponsor's private squeeze on a performer had nothing to do with the docks, the gate, or Marchetti at all — the first case in a while whose antagonist isn't even adjacent to his territory. Case 041 kept the streak alive without clarifying it one way or the other: the case ran through a pier and a waterfront crew, close enough to Marchetti's own docks to raise the question honestly, but he never appeared, by name or by proxy, to confirm or deny any hand in it. Case 042 finally answered the standing question, though not by making him an employer again: Marchetti reappeared as the cannery's own labor contract holder, present in the case's structure but indifferent to the superintendent's fate one way or the other — neither defending his own man nor helping the detective bring him down, just watching a contract he holds change hands without troubling to intervene. Not an employer, not quite an antagonist, but no longer absent either.

The vow's letter held (he took no marker of his own) but its spirit was tested for the first time in Case 032, when he walked into the Blue Room on his own account and walked out having taken something from its desk instead. Untouched by Cases 033-038. Case 039 touched it sideways rather than head-on: a dock crew offered to wipe a dead man's Blue Room marker as payment for a widow's silence, meaning ordinary muscle believed they had some reach into that book at all — whether that belief was true, or just another lie told to a frightened woman, is now its own open question. She refused rescue in 032 (would spend every bound name); whether his stolen page ever frees her is open. Untouched by Cases 040-042.

New in Case 032. The detective has now seen the ledger of futures directly and holds one page of it. What else is written in it, who else is bound, and what the page itself says are all open. Untouched by Cases 033-038. Case 039 brushed the cluster for the first time since — not through the house itself, but through a crew claiming they could erase a dead docker's marker from it. If that claim was real, the book's reach runs further down into the docks than the detective has ever confirmed; if it was a bluff, someone was willing to lie about that reach to buy a widow's silence. Either answer matters and neither is settled. Untouched by Cases 040-042.

New in Case 032. She refused rescue on the grounds that it would cost the others still in the book. Whether that's loyalty, fear, or something the house taught her to say — and whether the detective will accept it as final — is unopened. Untouched by Cases 033-042.

New in Case 032. Something governs the Blue Room's ledger that even Marchetti won't cross. Its name, face, and reach are completely unknown. Untouched by Cases 033-042.

New in Case 032. For the first time in the series, Marchetti has a limit that isn't the detective's own conscience. Whether that's respect, fear, or a standing arrangement is unopened. Untouched by Cases 033-042.

New in Case 032. He didn't bury this one — he stole it. One page of the Blue Room's ledger now sits in his own drawer alongside the season's unspent truths. What it says, and what it's worth to whoever answers to the hand above Marchetti, is untested. Untouched by Cases 033-042.

His free work in 034 delivered the debt onto Eddie instead of the woman; what Eddie paid, alive or not, is open. Untouched by Case 040 — a different free case, a different kind of cost. Untouched by Case 041 as well, for a different reason still — a bury_the_truth case, and this time the whole weight of the cost stayed inside the detective rather than landing on any bystander at all. Untouched by Case 042 too — a clean win with no bystander left holding a bill.

Eddie had a pre-existing debt-shaped hole that made her story stick; what it was, and who else knows, is untouched. Untouched by Cases 040-042.

Dale's 033 warning came true in 034 (a plant, not a truth); whether he changes how he answers the door is open. Untouched by Cases 037-039, all three of which came through the door — or into his hands — as ordinary, honest cases rather than fresh tests of it. Case 040 revived the pattern in a new shape: he worked it entirely for free again, dead air nobody outside the station house heard about, and this time the bill landed on the client herself rather than a stranger — closer to Case 034's shape than Case 033's. Case 041 sat outside this thread's usual shape entirely — the singer came to him with a straight question, not a hard-luck plea tailored to his grace, and whatever this case cost landed inside the answer itself rather than inside the fee or the lack of one. Case 042 returned to the ordinary pattern of 037-039: a forewoman's case that read as honest work through reputation, not a fresh test of the famous door itself.

The drawer: 029 truth kept, 032 stolen page kept. Case 037 broke the pattern for the first time — the evidence wasn't filed away, it was burned outright, nothing left to keep at all. Untouched by Case 038, which had nothing to bury at all — a clean win, same as Case 033. Case 039 had nothing to bury either — the truth went onto the public record through the law, not into any drawer. Case 040 had nothing to bury either — nothing was ever found to hide; the whole cost simply fell on the woman who refused to pay it. Case 041 returned the drawer to its older habit after Case 037's one detour into fire: for the first time in four cases there was something worth hiding, and this time he didn't burn it — he kept it, the borrowed name and the hunted man's true situation filed away nowhere but in his own silence, so the woman who'd hired him could sail out believing the kinder version instead of holding the true one. Case 042 had nothing to bury either — a clean win, same shape as Cases 033 and 038: the truth went straight into an audit the law could hold, not into the drawer.

After a six-case rest, Marchetti hired the detective twice running (030, 031); untouched as an employer by Cases 032-042 — Cases 037 and 038 brought him back into frame only as an incidental, unpaid source of truth, Cases 039 through 041 didn't bring him into frame at all, and Case 042 finally answered the question the run had been building toward: he reappeared as the cannery's own contract holder, present in the case's shape but indifferent to which way it broke, extending the streak of no fee, no employment, and no favor asked in either direction to a full eleven cases since Case 031.

The detective's own word, spoken to close the fighter's contract in Case 031, remains on record as the thing that made Marchetti's stable-grab look fair. Untouched through Case 042.

Dale named it outright in Case 031: the leash only feels like a favor until the day it doesn't. Untouched through Case 042.

Still unheard from since Case 024. Untouched through Case 040 — the reorganization board's actual sponsor was never named, and nothing since has traced any further than a clerk following regulation, a walking boss acting on his own account, or a radio sponsor's private business, so whether any of this silence shares a hand at the top remains an open question rather than a confirmed link. Case 041 added a fourth independent actor to that same list — a fraud spending himself down for love — with no more visible tie to the top than any of the others. Case 042 didn't touch it either — a cannery superintendent skimming his own payroll and an indifferent Marchetti are both ordinary, visible actors, with nothing tracing up toward the civic apparatus at all.

Unchanged. The examiner's read of the detective is now on the record in full, formal, and permanent form; the larger institutional silence about the condemnation order and the man at the top remains fully intact. Untouched through Case 042.

Thirteen; 029 added a burial-mark, 030-035 added none within that count. Case 036 added a mark of an entirely different kind again, outside this drawer-count: a formal licensing-register entry, verified head to toe, permanent and public, missing only a name. Case 037 added nothing to this count either — the one new item this case produced didn't go into the drawer at all; it went into the stove. Case 038 added nothing either — a clean win, nothing to keep, nothing to bury, same as Case 033. Case 039 added nothing either — a partial justice with nothing to file away; what didn't resolve cleanly stayed out in the open, on a widow's own account, not in the detective's drawer. Case 040 added nothing either — no marker, no file, no bill anywhere with his name on it; the whole cost stayed with the woman who paid it. Case 041 added nothing either — nothing was filed, nothing was burned in front of anyone, nothing bears his name anywhere the machine or the ledger could find it; what he kept this time he kept silently, in a place no count reaches. Case 042 added nothing either — a clean win, same as Cases 033 and 038: the audit went onto a public record the law can hold, not into his drawer.

Still three carried names; 034 may add Eddie as a fourth; 035-036 cost him his anonymity and facelessness instead, not a new name. Case 037 uncovered an old name of a different kind entirely — his own, sold by someone else years before this count ever started — which changes what he knows about his past without changing the count itself. Case 038 added nothing to this count either — no marker changed hands; the case turned on an honest crime the law could hold, not a debt anyone carried. Case 039 added nothing to this count either — the marker in play belonged to a dead docker and his widow, not to the detective, and it was never actually spent; the crew's offer to wipe it died with their silence bid. Case 040 added nothing to this count either — no marker existed to trade at all; the sponsor's lever was a livelihood, not a debt. Case 041 added nothing to this count either — no marker changed hands and no debt was struck; what he carries out of this one is a secret he chose to keep, not a debt anyone handed him, and the count has never had a column for that kind of weight. Case 042 added nothing to this count either — a payroll skim is a theft from an employer, not a debt owed to the detective, and nothing changed hands between him and anyone on that Monday list.

Deepened directly by Case 036. The machine's reach no longer stops at the detective's business license or the claims of people around him; it now runs into a formal personal registration of the man himself, complete in every particular but a name. Untouched by Cases 037-042.

The girl twenty years dead. Every road sealed. Untouched through Case 042.

Unchanged: Flynn keeps helping (033, 035, offered 036 an out, tipped 037) without ever touching the sealed Farrows thread. Case 038 had no Flynn appearance at all, and neither did Case 039. Case 040 gave Flynn his first appearance since Case 037, but only as an ordinary listener mourning a dark radio dial — not as a source or a helper this time — and it left the Farrows thread untouched a fourth case running. Case 041 didn't bring Flynn into frame at all, leaving the Farrows thread untouched a fifth case running and marking the first case since 039 in which he doesn't appear even in passing. Case 042 continued the same silence — no Flynn, no Chronicle, no brush against the Farrows thread at all, a sixth case running.

Unchanged. Brogan is gone. What he left is in Flynn of the Chronicle's keeping. Every road around it is sealed.

The arrangement from Case 016 is still in the ledger. The respectable thief is still walking. The dead clerk's name is clear.

New in 036: the detective is now fully registered but nameless in the licensing machine. Case 037 was the first case to arrive after that fact was true, and it arrived gently — an old friend's widow, not a stranger working an angle. Case 038 was another gentle one: a fighter's wife walked through the same door trusting the same known-not-named reputation. Case 039 wasn't a knock at the door at all in the same sense — a widow drawn into the case by what she'd witnessed, not a client seeking him out — so the thread's real test, what visibility costs him against someone who actually means him harm, is still untested. Case 040 didn't test it either — the performer came to him through Flynn's own listening habit and a reputation for free work, not through anyone who wished the detective ill. Case 041 tested it from a new angle rather than the expected one: the torch singer trusted the known-not-named reputation enough to bring him the one question she'd rather no one else in the city, including the man she loved, ever learned she'd asked — a test of discretion rather than danger. Case 042 tested it in its plainest key yet: a cannery forewoman came to him the same way word travels along a gate or a dock — through an ordinary reputation for honest work — with no danger to him and no discretion required at all.

New in Case 036. For the first time in the series, the machine holds a verified physical file on the detective. He can no longer count on vanishing. Untouched by Cases 037-042, none of which touched the civic record at all.

New in Case 037. The detective and Gil went back to before either of them had a name that meant anything — a shared bench at the hiring gate. What else that history holds, and whether anyone else from those days is still out there, is untouched. Untouched by Cases 038-042, none of which returned to the hiring gate as further windows into the detective's own past.

New in Case 037. Gil bought months of steady call-slips by selling out fellow dockers to whoever ran the gate list. How long it went on, and how many men beside the detective it touched, is unresolved. Untouched by Cases 038-042.

New in Case 037. Years back, before the office, before the name on the door, Gil sold the detective's own name for a call-slip. What that cost him then — a bad week, a beating, a debt — has never been told. Untouched by Cases 038-042.

New in Case 037. The hiring hall's call-slip system, and who really controls who gets to work each morning at Marchetti's docks, is now visible as a lever in its own right, separate from the Blue Room's book and separate from Marchetti's ordinary business. Case 038 tested it directly: a promoter tried to use that same call-slip lever against an honest fighter's kid brother, and lost — the boy's name got called anyway, on the detective's word. Case 039 tested it a third time, and darker than either before: a walking boss used the same gate to murder a man and nearly frame another for it, and even after the hand that did the killing went to a cell, the boss who ordered it kept his freedom and simply moved uptown — the lever itself has now survived three cases running, and the question of who actually answers for how it gets used is still wide open. Case 040 didn't touch the gate itself, but it drew an unmistakable parallel: the same who-gets-to-work scarcity that runs the hiring hall turned out to run the airwaves too, tracked forward under airtime_is_the_shapeup. Case 041 didn't touch the gate either, and drew no parallel to it this time — its scarcity ran on borrowed time and hidden safety rather than work or airtime, a currency the gate has never quite measured. Case 042 extended the pattern into a third industry entirely, and for the first time turned it on its head: a cannery gate ran on the identical who-eats scarcity, the same man who'd walked free from Case 039's version of this lever tried to work it a second time, and this time he was caught and stopped rather than simply refused or outlasted.

New in Case 037. The hall paid the widow on the detective's word alone — an accident he confirmed was true, wrapped around a silence he chose. Case 038 answered it a second time, in the affirmative: his plain word alone got a boy's name called at the dawn gate over a promoter's objection. Case 039 complicated it for the first time: this time it wasn't only his word that moved the hall, it was a widow's, spoken over his built foundation of iron and paperwork — and what it bought her was a cell for the triggerman and a clean name for the man wrongly blamed, but no guarantee at all that her own family still eats come morning. Untouched by Case 040, which had nothing to do with the hall. Untouched by Case 041 either, for the same reason — no hall, no call-slip, no word of his spent on anyone's behalf at the gate. Untouched by Case 042 as well — a different gate, a different industry, and this time it was an audit trail, not a spoken word, that moved the outcome.

New in Case 038. For the first time in the series, a licensing body — the boxing commission — acted fast and clean on evidence the detective found, pulling a promoter's rented muscle out from under him before the bell rang, without costing the detective anything from his own drawer. Whether Calloway Bay has more than one honest civic institution, alongside the license examiner, is now an open question. New in Case 039. The widow's silence was never bought with cash; it was bought with the one thing that keeps her children fed — her family's place at the morning call. That the gate itself can be used as a threat against a witness, not just a worker, is now visible in a way it wasn't before. Untouched beyond this case. Untouched by Cases 040-042.

New in Case 039. An earlier winch death under the same walking boss, quietly signed off years back as the first one was meant to be, turned out to be exactly what made the second death provable as murder rather than misfortune. New in Case 039. Rather than lean on the widow's word alone, the detective chose to build the case out of iron and paperwork first, so her voice would be the last brick, not the whole wall. Whether that becomes his standing practice with every future witness, or was a one-case act of care, is open. Case 040 offered no witness of that kind to test it against — the performer's own word was never doubted, only weaponized against someone else. Case 041 offered no witness either, but echoed the underlying question from the opposite direction: rather than deciding what he was willing to spend of someone else's credibility, he decided what he was willing to spend of the truth itself, and chose to spend his own peace of mind rather than the singer's. Case 042 offered no witness of that kind either — the case turned on paperwork and an audit trail, not on anyone's word being spent at all.

New in Case 039. The moment she spoke, the men who'd fed her family all winter looked at the harbor instead of at her. What that ostracism costs her, and whether it ever thaws, is completely unresolved. Untouched by Cases 040-042.

New in Case 040. A sponsor used the money that kept a nightly radio show on the air to demand a performer inform on the broadcast partner she loved, trading his exposure for her own airtime. Nothing in it was provably a crime, and the sponsor walked away exactly as clean as he arrived. Whether this is one man's private cruelty or a standing practice among the city's advertisers is entirely open. Untouched by Cases 041-042.

New in Case 040. The same scarcity logic that runs the hiring gate — who eats depends on who calls your name — turned out to govern the airwaves too: who gets heard depends on who a sponsor decides is worth paying for. Untouched by Case 041. Case 042 deepened the parallel rather than leaving it untouched: a third instance of the identical scarcity surfaced at a cannery gate, confirming the logic runs well beyond the docks and the airwaves both — and this time, unlike the sponsor and unlike the first pass at the hiring hall, the man wielding it was actually stopped.

New in Case 040. She chose silence and the loss of her own livelihood over giving up the man she loved. Whether he ever learns what she refused to do to him, whether their friendship survives her going dark without explanation, and whether she ever works again in this city, are all completely unresolved. Case 041 echoed this thread's shape from the other side of the desk: another silence chosen to protect someone loved, only this time it was the detective doing the choosing, and the person it protected never even learned a choice had been made on her behalf. Untouched by Case 042.

New in Case 041. The man promising to carry the singer out of Calloway Bay was traveling under a name that belonged to a dead man, and the pier crew he'd once informed on to save his own skin already knew he was slipping town. Whose name he actually took, how he came to take it, whether that dead man's own history ever surfaces, and whether the crew lets him go now that the boat's gone or comes for him anyway, are all completely open. Untouched by Case 042.

New in Case 041. He bought her passage out by spending down the last of his own hidden safety — money, cover, whatever had kept him breathing this long — and the detective read it plain: once her boat clears the harbor, he won't last the winter. Whether that reading is right, and whether anyone besides the detective ever learns what her freedom actually cost him, is unopened. Untouched by Case 042.

New in Case 041. She sailed out of Calloway Bay warm and believing the man waiting for her is exactly who he claimed to be. The gap between what she believes and what actually happened now lives nowhere but in the detective, the only man on the pier who knows the whole of it. Whether that gap ever closes — by her learning it, or by consequences finding the man without her ever knowing — is completely open. Untouched by Case 042.

New in Case 041, and never formally closed. She hired the detective to answer one question — is he real — and got an answer that satisfied her completely without ever being the true one. The actual verdict lives in the detective alone; whether she ever learns what she really asked for, or what he actually found, is untouched. Untouched by Case 042.

New in Case 042. A cannery forewoman was ordered to sell out the women organizing her line or lose her own gate spot — the same who-eats scarcity the docks and the airwaves have already shown, now confirmed a third time in a third industry. Whether it runs further still, into other trades the detective hasn't touched yet, is untested.

New in Case 042. The superintendent's leverage over the forewoman was funded by a payroll he was quietly skimming, and it was that skim, not the threat itself, that gave the detective something the law could actually hold. How long the skim ran, how much it came to, and whether anyone downstream profited from looking the other way, remain unresolved.

New in Case 042. Marchetti holds the cannery's own labor contract, and did nothing to shield the superintendent once the audit turned on him — the first time his indifference has actively helped the detective rather than merely leaving him alone. Whether that indifference is a policy or was simply this one man's bad luck, and whether the cannery contract becomes a recurring feature of Marchetti's business the way the docks and the gate already are, is open.
